Local MP Michael Moore and MSP Jeremy Purvis have responded to the latest jobless figures for the Scottish Borders by calling upon the UK and Scottish Governments to do more to support the Borders economy.

The latest unemployment statistics, released today, show that there has been a 16% increase in unemployment in the region over the past month. This is the second highest increase in Scotland. Furthermore, there has been a huge 70% rise in unemployment since this time last year.Michael Moore MP

Commenting after the figures were released, Mr Moore said:

"Yet again we have more evidence that the Borders' economy is suffering adversely in this current economic downturn. How many more statistics like these need to be released before Ministers - both at Holyrood and at Westminster - realise that our region needs specific and urgent support?"

Mr Purvis added:

"Together with our Council colleagues, we have put forward a package of proposals which would provide a real boost to the local economy. I hope that Ministers will give our proposals serious and immediate consideration. Otherwise, there is a very real danger that the situation will continue to get worse."
