Commenting on the publication of European Commission's Green Paper on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) published today, Orkney MSP and Liberal Democrat Fisheries spokesman, Liam McArthur, said: "The Commission is right to acknowledge that simply tinkering with the CFP is not enough. A centralised, top down approach has not worked, and further moves towards genuine regional management are overdue.
"It is important that we secure a profitable fishing fleet and this can only be achieved by safeguarding our key fish stocks.
"If it is necessary to reduce the size of the European fleet, however, then the cuts must not fall on Scottish boats. After two painful decommissioning processes, it is time for other member states to step up to the plate.
"As the Green Paper is discussed over the coming months, it is vital that the interests of the Scottish fleet are put to the fore. But, this is not a green light for SNP Ministers to once again use the industry as a political football for their own electoral purposes".
