Commenting on the US Ambassador's comments that the US Government would have started extradition proceedings had they realised the Scottish Government was going to grant Megrahi compassionate release, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"Given the publicity surrounding the process leading up to the eventual compassionate release of Mr Al Megrahi, I find it hard to believe that the US Government wasn't aware that this was a possibility.
"Furthermore, given that one of the fundamental principles of Scots law is that somebody cannot be tried for the same crime twice, it's difficult to see what case the US Government could have put for extradition."
